The William Jewish Breman Home

The Jewish Home was founded in the late 1940’s to serve the Jewish elderly, some of whom were living in substandard housing and non-Jewish surroundings. The Home served as a small retirement community providing shelter, housekeeping, meals and recreational activities. At that time, the medical technology did not exist to maintain the lives of persons who were greatly compromised physically or mentally. Although, modern medicine is able to keep people alive longer, it still cannot eradicate the decline in physical and mental status that is often a part of the aging process. Our Home now serves a population of residents who are totally dependent on others for 24-hour assistance with their most basic needs. The Home also serves a group of individuals who require short-term rehabilitation after a hospitalization due to surgery, stroke or other medical complications. The care provided by the Home is labor-intensive and expensive.

Since the inception of the Home, the Board of Directors has remained committed to serving all frail elderly in need of our care, regardless of their ability to pay. More than half of our residents cannot pay for their care and rely on government funding in the form of Medicaid. As you might expect, Medicaid funding does not pay for the quality of care we, as a Jewish community, are committed to providing. Furthermore, Medicaid has experienced significant budget reductions which have already affected payments to the Home. We further expect that the government’s ability to fund the care of the elderly will likely decline in the future.

For the Jewish Home to continue to serve our community in the manner you have come to expect, we need to significantly increase our endowment funding. This will ensure that our residents will be able to live their final days with dignity in the safe haven provided by the Home.

We ask you to reflect upon the fifth commandment to…”Honour thy father and thy mother…” A well-funded endowment will guarantee that we will be able to maintain the high standard of care and assure that the Home remains available to serve you or your family or your friends no matter what the family’s financial situation. Please consider leaving a bequest to the Jewish Home.
