The Temple

Young Honi ha-M’aggel comes upon an old man planting a carob tree. Honi asks if the man expects to be alive in seventy years when the tree at last bears fruit. “I found carob trees in this world,” replies the old man. “Just as those before me planted trees for my sake, so do I plant this tree for the sake of those who will follow me.”

Atlanta’s first congregation, The Temple is an iconic presence in the Jewish world. Nearly 1500 families strong and growing, The Temple offers a multitude of worship, educational, social action and community building opportunities for our remarkably diverse membership.

With the installation of Rabbi Peter Berg as only our fifth Senior Rabbi since 1896, we begin a new chapter in The Temple’s storied history; one that promises to include expanding programmatic, worship and social action initiatives to serve our growing and vibrant community.

Much has been accomplished already. In recent years, we have renewed our landmark facility, created Atlanta’s premier pre-school — The TELC — and reestablished The Temple’s solid financial foundation by virtually eliminating operating deficits.

As a result, our Endowment Fund is once again available to serve its core purpose, to invest in our future by:

  • Insuring the ongoing superb quality of our facilities
  • Fostering new social action initiatives in keeping with The Temple’s 140 year commitment to Tikkun Olam
  • Funding new worship, educational and community programs outside of our core budget

As we look forward to our 150th Anniversary in 2017, we turn our attention to The Temple Endowment Initiative. Over the next ten years, through planned giving, we will substantially increase the value of The Temple Endowment and, in so doing, will assure the future viability and continued important work of our sacred community. We ask for your support as we begin a decade long journey to build a foundation for generations to come.

When thinking about the future, we all worry about the worldly needs of those we leave behind. We also must concern ourselves with the world that they will inherit. By including The Temple in your estate planning you will insure that Judaism, Torah, and community will continue to flourish. Your gift guarantees the Jewish future of The Temple.
